Job Summary
Provides leadership and has overall accountability for specific business units and or programs within Product Integrity function. Develops and aligns on strategic direction with function head and all management levels within assigned business units or functions such as Supply Chain, Community Operations and Daily Living. Identifies needs and directs the design and implementation of product integrity standards, policies and procedures regulatory, safety, social, quality in collaboration with Product Integrity peers for all front end items sold within the Walgreens family of companies. Identifies needs and resource plans to hire, retain and deploy a highly specialized team to implement programs to ensure compliance with ever evolving federal and state specific requirements, as well as ensuring prudent response to potential safety and social issues. This includes technical product responsibility as assigned for areas such all recall or potential recall decisions and processes, as well as decisions regarding the social responsibility of suppliers and vendors for example human rights, environmental stewardship, etc. Leads teams managing product related technical matters and liaises with internal and external stakeholders to achieve business goals.

Job Responsibilities
  • Leads and manages programs and teams for delivering all aspects of short and long term Product Integrity platforms for Private Brands and assigned business units.
  • Contributes to development and implementation of the core strategic framework for product compliance and safety for assigned businesses. Responsible for developing the necessary staffing plans and identifying technical support requirements internal and external.
  • Directs the development, communication and adherence to policies and procedures necessary to govern quality assurance and food safety across all facets of the business. Equally responsible for continuous education at all levels to ensure full understanding and compliance. Responsible for the Food Safety function for the enterprise, including Retail Operations and distribution.
  • Investigates product quality and compliance issues for example tampering, adulteration, mislabeling, etc that impact both fresh and manufactured products as they develop and are reported by the media, customers, suppliers or regulatory officials. Works with Merchandising, Supply Chain and Community Operations to identify and plan any corrective actions necessary. Assist media relations in developing relevant, clear communications for impacted business units.
  • Manages 3rd Party partnerships for applicable work streams Majority of specialized work is done through third party audit firms who conduct over 5,000 audits annually includes manufacturing audits and product testing. Responsible for choosing appropriate partners, aligning on contract terms and managing partnerships to ensure work is completed in a timely and accurate manner. Aligned with legal, responsible for developing contracts and ensuring compliance.
  • Leads Specification Development functional team Responsible for leading the development of product specifications for all plus 17,000 items currently under Private Brands. This includes developing basic specs, developing a system to house those specs and having the long term capability to track raw materials and have visibility to potential issues.
  • Advisory Boards or Industry Linkage: Responsible for ensuring full connection to the industry and the areas of specialization important regulatory compliance, consumer testing, product testing, food safety, etc.
  • Directs team of managers and specialists in the delivery of specialized Product Integrity Services.
  • Leverages technical experience to advise all levels of management on Research and Development matters

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and at least 6 years of experience in consumer packaged goods, or research and development, or government regulations related to food, and importation of products, or product commercialization OR High School Diploma/GED and at least 9 years of experience in consumer packaged goods, or research and development, or government regulations related to food, and importation of products, or product commercialization.
  • At least 3 year experience managing product and or vendor programs in the retail, or CPG industry or other consumer related industry.
  • At least 3 years experience in technical roles in R and D, Quality, Manufacturing or Procurement.
  • Experience leading and coordinating senior level meetings
  • Experience collaborating with both internal and external resources to develop strategies that meet department goals within budget and established timelines.
  • Experience in diagnosing, isolating, and resolving complex issues with key strategies to resolve problems.
  • Experience interpreting state and federal regulations, and maintaining working relationships with industry and regulatory officials.
  • Experience representing company with outside association and boards
  • Experience negotiating with outside vendors, including negotiating contracts, prices, resolving service issues and reconciling differences.
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Excel (for example using SUM function, setting borders,setting column width, inserting charts, using text wrap, sorting, setting headers and footersand or print scaling).
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft PowerPoint (for example applying a theme, formatting character spacing, inserting a picture, changing slide layout and theme colors, adding transitions, customizing slide numbers, changing chart style and or formatting font)
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 3 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and or cross functional team leadership
  • Willing to travel up to or at least 30% of the time for business purposes (domestically and or internationally).

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or Master’s Degree in Technical field
  • At least 5 years of experience directing product integrity function(s) for a >$5B national retailer.
  • Experience in international roles.
  • Experience in private brands
