Job Summary
Responsible for the insurable risk processes for Walgreens in the key areas of General Liability, Workers’ Compensation and Auto. Supports the Insurable Risk team with the processes for Directors and Officers, Fiduciary, Cyber and Property & Business Interruption insurance. Responsible for managing all aspects of Casualty and Property claims including management of the third party claims administrators and approving cost-effective claim settlements. Identifies and analyzes risks affecting Walgreens and supports the implementation of risk control activities. Suggests improvements to WBA’s and Walgreens’ insurance program and ways to mitigate claims and risks to the Global Head of Insurable Risk. Deputises for the Global Head of Insurable Risk when absent. Senior manager in the Deerfield Insurable Risk team.

Job Responsibilities
  • Senior Manager in Deerfield Insurable Risk. Responsible for managing the department (team of 12) when Global Head of Insurable Risk is absent.
  • Manages an extensive portfolio of low-medium value, high frequency General Liability, Workers Compensation and Auto claims, with significant total incurred value. Subject expert. Ensures Third Party Administrator is handling and settling claims in accordance with agreed service standards, KPI’s and delegated authorities. Conducts claim reviews to ensure effective cost-effective claims handling and settlements. Works collegiately with TPA, Legal and external lawyers to ensure appropriate and optimum settlement of General Liability, Workers Compensation and Auto claims. Reviews and evaluates the TPA in its investigation, financial reserving and settlement of Casualty and Auto claims, including litigated claims.
  • Analyses Management Information regularly to ensure expert knowledge of the number and cost of claims, including key causes, relative frequency and cost, loss picks, balance sheet reserves and movement in key metrics.
  • Key member of cross-functional team working to drive down the number and cost of claims. Works closely and effectively with Retail, Health & Safety and other functions to embed new working practices, policies and procedures to support Team Members with the claims process and deliver savings in the incurred cost.
  • Maintains an excellent working knowledge of other WBA classes of insurance including Directors and Officers, Cyber, Fiduciary and Property & Business Interruption, and a thorough knowledge of Company operating procedures and practices to ensure compliance with the insurance program and the provision of appropriate advice to the Business.
  • Monitors and assesses business operations and intervenes to reduce, mitigate or eliminate insurable risks, making insurance program related recommendations to the Global Head of Insurable Risk when appropriate.
  • Reviews recommendations resulting from relevant benchmark information as it relates to WBA’s insurance programs. Communicates any recommendations to the Global Head of Insurable Risk.
  • Mentors, coaches, and develops employees through orientation, training, establishment of objectives and communication of policies and rules; builds morale and motivation.
  • Liaises with WBA’s Insurance Broker to ensure appropriate provision of information for the insurance Market and suitability of policy wordings.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 7 years of experience in risk management and claims management OR High School Diploma/GED and at least 10 years of experience in risk management and claims management.
  • Experience with a large multi-state or global company in the retail or healthcare sector with knowledge of casualty and property insurance coverages, financial products coverage and other insurance placements. Good working knowledge of global and self-insured programs.
  • Highly competent with analyzing and reporting data in order to identify issues, trends, or exceptions to drive improvement of results and find solutions.
  • Experience in identifying operational issues and recommending and implementing strategies to resolve problems.
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Excel (for example: using SUM function, setting borders, setting column width, inserting charts, using text wrap, sorting, setting headers and footers and/or print scaling).
  • Intermediate level skill in Microsoft Word (for example: inserting headers, page breaks, page numbers and tables and/or adjusting table columns).
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring and training staff.
  • Willing to travel up to 15% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
  • At least 2 years of experience planning, developing, and managing departmental expense and capital budgets.
  • At least 2 years of experience directly managing people, including hiring, developing, motivating, and directing people as they work.
  • Willing to travel up to 15% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business Administration, or Risk Management.
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and at least 7 years of experience in risk management and claims management.
  • Experience with a large, multi-state or global company in the retail or healthcare sector with global knowledge of casualty and property insurance coverages, risk management and claims management.
