PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
The Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and Western University PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program delivers postgraduate training to pharmacists so that they can advocate for patient care for the members of their community, achieve their professional goals, become a leader within the profession, and contribute to advancements in healthcare. A graduate from this program would have matured in their clinical experience and skills to provide and expand upon the patient care services conducted within community and specialty pharmacy practice. Residents will directly impact and improve patient outcomes. This residency is based out of a URAC accredited Walgreens specialty pharmacy in Orange County, CA where pharmacy teams offer a variety of specialty clinical pharmacy services for patients who are prescribed complex therapies. Our partnership with Western University provides a unique longitudinal rotation in ambulatory care services and completion of a teaching certificate. Additional sites in Los Angeles will provide further exposure to hazardous drug compounding and district, area, and regional leadership experiences.
