A pharmacy career beyond the white coat

Joe Moy began his journey at Walgreens more than 30 years ago in 1993 as a third-year pharmacy student intern in Flushing, New York.

“Walgreens was the employer of choice in community pharmacy, and I was excited to start my career with such a reputable brand,” Moy says.

After graduating from St. John’s University, Moy moved into a staff pharmacist role, and was eventually promoted to pharmacy manager, where he oversaw pharmacy operations at a retail store location.

During his career, Moy took full advantage of Walgreens University, an internal learning and development center of excellence, to develop his professional skills. Through Walgreens University, Moy attended classes about presenting to executives, communicating effectively and Lean Six Sigma training, and he even participated in an internal leadership development program. Additionally, he believes there are soft skills that helped advance his career over the years such as active listening, successful collaboration with business teams, cross-functional work and being accountable for results.

After his in-store roles, Moy was promoted to the position of District Pharmacy Supervisor. In this position, his pharmacy operations oversight expanded to include multiple store locations and managing pharmacists and pharmacy managers assigned to those stores.   Later on, he became a District Manager on Special Assignment, supporting various pharmacy conversions through acquisition and field transformation work. He also oversaw the contract immunizer program which was critical to meet increased vaccine demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bringing new talent to Walgreens pharmacies

Recently, Moy began working as a senior manager within the Walgreens Talent Acquisition team. In this role, he oversees a team of pharmacy talent acquisition partners supporting pharmacist recruitment on the east coast.

“My current job is a newly created role, along with the pharmacy talent acquisition partners in each region. We are all learning how to successfully partner with the field leaders in our respective regions to increase the candidate pool for pharmacist and pharmacy intern hires,” Moy says. “Being able to create the vision for this role and align with the team on ‘what good looks like’ gets me up in the morning. We have the opportunity to make a difference by promoting Walgreens and supporting our field leaders in hiring future pharmacists.”
