How we’re improving our work environment for retail pharmacists

At Walgreens, we’ve listened to our pharmacy team and have worked to make improvements to the work environment and bring more purpose back to the role of a community-based pharmacist. Here, we empower our pharmacists to take on new clinical roles in the community and have freed up time for our pharmacists to provide the important care our patients need. Some important changes we’ve rolled out:

-Increased base pay for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
-Elimination of task-based metrics from pharmacy staff performance reviews
-Infrastructure enhancements and technology investments
-Enhanced annual merit review process to provide compensation increases or lump sum payments for pharmacists
-Investments into our micro-fulfillment network to free up pharmacist time

Why Walgreens? Hear from our pharmacists.

"The most fulfilling part of being a pharmacist at Walgreens is the opportunity to make a positive impact on patients’ lives. This starts with building longitudinal relationships with my patients, which leads to the foundation of trust. When my patients trust me, they also trust that my expertise in my role will ensure that they’re receiving the best treatment for their health conditions and overall health. It’s a rewarding experience to use my degree and experience to make impactful changes for my patients." Katelyn, Pharmacy Manager

“Walgreens has helped make me a more confident pharmacist. I have gained managerial skills such as problem solving and conflict resolution. I also have a better understanding on administrative aspects of pharmacy like inventory management and regulatory requirements.” Aashu, Pharmacy Manager

“I have learned a lot of leadership skills through Walgreens University. As a new manager, I took the year-long training course on manager responsibilities. Some skills were more concrete skills, like budgets and schedules. Some skills were more soft skills, like how to have difficult conversations with employees and how to write constructive annual reviews. All the classes throughout the year were very helpful for leadership development and none of the  topics were taught at pharmacy school. I also had the opportunity to sit in with district and area management meetings so I could hear their priorities for the company in general. Afterward I was invited to present to my district how the company priorities relate specifically to pharmacy operations. The experience overall made it very clear how daily behaviors and habits can positively affect pharmacy productivity and ultimately let you help more patients per day with the same resources." Bonnie, Pharmacy Manager

Pharmacy Technician Opportunities

Pharmacy technicians are integral to our retail operations as they are, in many cases, the front line to our pharmacy patients. Our pharmacy technician role has evolved from a transaction-based environment to a more patient-centric focus. Additionally, you can launch your pharmacy technician career right here at Walgreens by “earning while you learn!”

Our Pharmacy Technician Training Program is recognized by the ASHP and Department of Labor as an apprenticeship program – giving you an entry point to a career in healthcare and supporting you in taking steps towards becoming a certified pharmacy technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA). Through our accredited training program, you’ll get all of the education and support you need to sit for these important exams and take you to the next level of your development as a healthcare professional.

Our team member PTCE (PTCB) pass rates are at 74% which is 4% above the national average. We invest in training, so you can invest in your career here at Walgreens.
